IF I KNEW YOU
If I knew you
you would have hugged me everyday
You would have laughed when I leapt onto my bed
because I had it in my head
the boogie man was under there
waiting to grab my feet
You would have tucked me into bed real tight
so my little feet wouldn’t peek out at night
And when I couldn’t go to sleep
a lullaby you would sing
and stroke my forehead lovingly
You would do that …wouldn’t you
If I knew you
You would have washed my face in gentle sweeps
where chocolate drops had splashed my cheeks
You would have pestered me night and day
to brush my teeth the proper way
and I would have kept on trying to trick you
If I knew you
You would have held my hand real tight
to keep me from taking flight
You would have run to me when I fell
it would only be a scratch
but you would have used the biggest patch
to match its significance to me
And when I felt loves first kiss
I would have tried to hide it
but you would have known
I guess you would have known
when my heart was shattered too
or when I did something scary
even though I couldn’t tell you straight away
You would have been there to receive the tears
without the explanation
And when I told untruths
or tried to pull a scam on you
I would wonder how you knew
and why you let me see it through
Later I would know
you took the time to know me too
If I knew you
I’m all grown up now
Sometimes I wonder where you are
would I know you walking down the street
Would I see my face reflected back at me
I don’t need to ask if you think of me from time to time
I know you do - I’m a mother too
guess I knew you after all....
