ONCE UPON A TIME
Her body trembles
the night closes in
skin itches, veins spent
pale and thin
How long has it been
since her last hit
Must find the man
who’ll make it alright
and she wonders where
she’ll bed tonight.
Her mothers face ghostly
appeared in the haze
and she wonders
what lead her into this maze
there was another time
another street
The girl strong and crazy
when life was a banquet
of laughter and friends
and tears dropped uninhibited
When beauty and youth
hadn’t yet paid the price
to the man who taught her
how to be nice
A passing glance of contempt
same street same beat
again and again
Her need reminds her
there’s no time to cry
or dwell on foolish thoughts
of times gone by
that was once upon a time
and she wonders where
she'll bed tonight
(Sometimes ....we who look on are addicted to a false sense of self righteousness)
